Six journalists and TV hosts were questioned over their report, columns and tweets this week.
Cumhuriyet Chief Editor Can Dündar and Özgür Mumcu gave testimony to prosecutors on Wednesday regarding investigations on “insulting” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Dündar is being investigated due to a news story in which a parliamentary candidate from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) argued Erdoğan may declare war on Syria if he would believe the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) would lose the election. Another investigation Dündar was questioned about was about a photo used in the story for the assassination of prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz. Columnist Mumcu is under investigation regarding two columns. Dündar has said the mentioned photo was not used to make propaganda of the organization which claimed the assassination while Mumcu has said he has not insulted the president but expressed his freedom of speech to inform the public.
Meanwhile, Mirgün Cabbas (news anchor), Banu Güven (news anchor), Pelin Batu (academician, TV host) and Koray Çalışkan (academician, former columnist, politician) are being investigated for “terroism propaganda” regarding their tweets about the prosecutor’s assassination.
